Keep Those Engines Running! Developing a Healthy Diet

You can find plenty of competing ideas about what constitutes the best fuel for your gas-powered car. Premium? Regular? What about additives? But everyone seems to agree on one thing: Make sure that what goes in the tank is gasoline. In cars made in the last 25 years or so, a plate under the gas cap prevents the large nozzles used to dispense diesel from going in. Good thing–diesel fuel doesn’t evaporate the same way gasoline does, so if somehow you did get diesel in there, the spark plugs would have nothing to ignite and the engine wouldn’t start.

In the same way that people may recommend different fuels and additives as better or worse, there’s plenty of debate about what constitutes the best diet. The paleo diet? Low-carb? Vegan? Mediterranean? But agreement about what kinds of things you shouldn’t eat is pretty much universal. The equivalent of diesel fuel for humans is food that’s high in saturated fats, salt, and added sugar.

Good fuel, of whatever mixture, is high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Keeping it varied ensures that you get the vitamins and nutrients you need to fuel your body for its daily work. And although a slice of cake or a cookie won’t do the same thing as sugar in the gas tank, the less improper fuel we take in, the better our bodies will run. Healthy eating can prevent or control

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Some forms of cancer

But let’s be honest–it’s hard to be excited about what you don’t have, right? As long as your engine still starts, and you can get up in the morning, it’s hard to think about some of the long-term effects of eating badly. So it’s important to recognize the immediate effects of eating well, too. Healthy eating can give you

  • Increased energy
  • Better sleep
  • Control over your weight
  • A stronger immune system

The best way to keep your engine running smoothly through a long life–whether the one in your car or the one in your body–is to fuel it properly. The physicians at Mountainstar Medical Group want to support you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They’re there to help you see the good you’re doing when you’re eating right, and help you figure out what to change if you’re not. Handy as it might be, there is no special mechanism to keep us from putting improper fuel into our mouths. But where would the fun be in that?
